Zach is our lead guide and one of our most requested because of his thorough, relaxed and friendly teaching method. He is starting his third year with First Ascent in 2008. He just completed his AMGA Single Pitch Instructor certification this spring. Zach places strong emphasis on environmental ethics and is a certified Leave No Trace educator as well as a certified Wilderness First Responder.
Zach was born and raised in the flatlands of Kansas. After participating in a National Outdoor Leadership School Semester in the Rocky Mountains he realized that he loved the mountains and the freedom they provided.
From that moment, rock climbing became one of Zach’s passions. Zach attended the University of Idaho where he graduated with his Bachelors degree in outdoor education. The environment he strives to create inspires individuals and groups to achieve their full potential.
We just wanted to let you know how much Peter, our son Jacob and I enjoyed our two days of climbing with Zach Horn. What an impressive person he is. His instruction was precise and he was very astute at assessing each of our abilities. We all made progress in our climbing and we learned a considerable amount about the geology of Smith Rock as we climbed and hiked the area. Zach's ability to relate to all of us, our 16 year old son included, made for a memorable two days.
Thanks and please give Zach our best.
Sincerely,
Hilary Sachs

Since leaving Idaho, Zach has traveled to climbing areas all over the West in search of classic traditional lines and stellar boulder problems. He spent the winter of 2006 climbing in Thailand and New Zealand, and last winter he climbed in Argentina.
His leadership skills, strong wilderness ethics, and excitement about rock climbing make him a valuable asset to First Ascent Climbing Services!
"This is a bit late, but I wanted to let you know how much fun my wife and I had during our outing with Zach last Saturday on August 19, 2006. We loved the climbing and Smith Rock is an amazing stretch of earth, but it was Zach's demeanor and expertise that made the excursion so enjoyable.
Neither of us had climbed before, but under Zach's tutelage (I felt) we learned a great deal in a few hours and were able to make noticeable progress.
As I noted above, we also found Zach's personality well-suited to our needs He seemed kind and intelligent, and we felt we were getting more than our money's worth from him.
We have family who travel to Central Oregon frequently and we will recommend First Ascent in general and Zach Horn specifically to them and everyone else who asks."
